Here’s How Much Time You’ll Spend Commuting to Work in [year](by City)
For many Americans, the most stressful part of the day is spent behind the wheel fighting rush hour traffic to and from work. In fact, studies have found that sitting in traffic is one of the least enjoyable things we do. Unfortunately, if you drive to and from work, you spend a lot of time dealing with commuting stress, and with commutes getting longer every year, things aren’t getting better for many of us.
Time spent behind the wheel is often time lost — time many would rather spend with loved ones, enjoying a hobby, being productive, or just relaxing.
This got us thinking — exactly how much time will the average person spend driving to and from work in 2019?
Using data from the US Census Bureau, we looked at commute times in almost 1,000 US cities. We found the average American will spend just over one week – 7.4 days – in 2019 just driving to and from work.
With the interactive map below, you can see how many days you’ll spend in 2019 commuting to and from work. You can also learn a little more about our methodology at the end of this article.
Here’s how we calculated the number of days you’ll spend commuting in 2019 in your city.
First, we had to figure out how many days the average person will work this year. There are 52 weeks in a year, and the average person works 5 days a week. That’s 260 working days, but we also had to account for vacation time. A 2018 study found the average American takes 17.2 days of vacation per year. That brings us to a total of 242.8 days per year the average American works when factoring in vacation days.
From there, we used data from the US Census Bureau on average daily roundtrip commute times for 964 cities and towns across the country and then did the math.
The above map is fully interactive and simple to use. If you want to see commute times in your area, just click the pin icon on the upper-left corner of the map, and it will zoom into your city (assuming you aren’t using a VPN).
From there, simply click on the nearest shaded region on the map and you’ll see data on that area’s average daily round trip commute time in minutes as well as the total number of days you’ll likely spend commuting this year.
One note for mobile users — you may find the map tool displays better if you flip your device to display horizontally.
