The Comprehensive Guide to the DasherDirect Card in 2023

Wondering if the DasherDirect card is worth getting? Learn what it is, how it works, and our honest thoughts on whether or not it's worth getting.

Key Takeaways

  • DasherDirect is a unique debit card for DoorDash drivers, offering immediate access to earnings and cashbacks on select purchases.
  • Dashers get instant earnings, no monthly fees, 2% cashback on gas, and can use over 55,000 AllPoint ATMs for free. There’s also a dedicated DasherDirect app for balance checks and transactions.
  • While the card offers no cash-out fees and easy balance checks via an app, incentives like gas cashback have reduced, and all earnings are directed to this card.
  • Dashers can apply through the Dasher app by providing essential details. Once approved, they’ll receive the card by mail and can manage funds through the DasherDirect app.

What Is the DasherDirect Prepaid Card?

At its core, DasherDirect is a specialized debit card crafted specifically for DoorDash drivers.

This isn’t just any ordinary card; it’s DoorDash’s way of offering its dedicated Dashers a streamlined method to access their earnings, combined with the added advantage of cashbacks on certain purchases.

The aim? To provide Dashers with both convenience and value, ensuring their hard work is rewarded in more ways than one.

In short, it’s an excellent debit card that’ll save you a lot of money on gas and enables you to access your hard-earned money earlier.

How Does the DasherDirect Card Work?

The DasherDirect card operates as a unique debit card exclusively for DoorDash drivers.

Once a Dasher signs up for this card, their DoorDash earnings are directly deposited onto it after each completed delivery session or “dash.” This means that Dashers no longer have to wait for traditional bank transfers or pay cash out fees when they want immediate access to their earnings.

In addition to providing instant access to funds, the card comes with the added benefit of offering cash back on specific purchases. For instance, Dashers were once offered an impressive 10% cash back on gas—a significant perk considering the fuel expenses many drivers incur.

While that particular offer has since changed, the card continues to provide cash back opportunities at varying rates for different types of purchases, enhancing its overall appeal.

There’s also a dedicated DasherDirect app. Just like with most banking apps, Dashers can check their balance, view transaction history, make transfers, and more, all from the convenience of their smartphone.

Perks and Benefits of the DasherDirect Card

The DasherDirect card comes with a handful of benefits and perks. These include:

  • No-fee ATM usage: use your card for free at more than 55,000 AllPoint ATMs
  • No need to wait for earnings: you’ll have instant access to Door Dash earnings
  • Cashback rewards: earn 2% cash back on gas purchases at any gas station
  • No monthly fees: no per-transaction or monthly fees
  • You can accept cash deposits: you can use any ReadyLink network location to make fee-free cash (on DoorDash’s side) deposits

Fees for Using the DasherDirect Card

Fortunately, there are no monthly maintenance fees with this card or when you use one of their partner ATMs. But, if you make direct deposits, Visa may charge you a fee of around $4.95 per reload.

Additionally, a couple of other fees include:

  • Card replacement: $5
  • Balance refund check: $3.50
  • Inactivity fee: $2.50 per month after 12 months of inactivity
  • Foreign transaction fees: 3% of your transaction
  • Bill pay with a paper check: $1 per check used
  • Non-network ATM fees: $2.50 per transaction

How to Get the DasherDirect Card

Applying for the DasherDirect card is easy, given that you meet the stipulated eligibility criteria before proceeding.

1. Eligibility Criteria

You must first meet the following prerequisites:

  • Be an active DoorDash driver based in the United States.
  • Already downloaded and installed the Dasher app.
  • Be able to provide documents like a government-issued ID or driver’s license, a social security number, and a verifiable US residential address.
  • Be at least 18 years of age.

2. Application Procedure

To kickstart the application process:

  • Access your Dasher app and select the “Earnings” section.
  • Navigate to the Bank icon and opt for “DasherDirect” listed under the “Other” payment preferences.
  • The app will then guide you to initiate the registration for the program.

During the sign-up phase, be prepared to provide:

  • A driver’s license or an equivalent government-issued identification.
  • Your residential address.
  • Your social security number.
  • Your full legal name.

Once processed, the DasherDirect prepaid Visa card will be mailed to you. After you receive it, activate the card and install the DasherDirect card app (available on both iOS and Android).

As an added note, it’s worth mentioning that while the physical card is in the mail, you’ll still have full access to your funds via the DasherDirect app.

My Experience in Getting the DasherDirect Card

I chose to explore DasherDirect primarily because of DoorDash’s promotional offer at the time, which promised 10% cash back on gas—a significant incentive given the high gas prices.

The sign-up process on DoorDash’s platform was clear and straightforward. After completing the required steps, I received the DasherDirect card within a span of 10 days, much quicker than I expected.

I set my DasherDirect card as my default payment option within the DoorDash app so that my earnings would be deposited onto the card after each delivery. This helped me eliminate cash-out fees or waiting periods to get my money after my Dashes.

Comparison With Other Payment Methods

The biggest questions that I get about this card is how it is different than other payment methods.

Arguably the biggest differentiator is the fact that with this card, Dashers can get get their earnings in their pocket almost as soon as a dash is done. Having cash on hand immediately can be a game-changer when you’re out Dashing and need to pay for expenses like gas.

Second to that would be the ability to avoid cash-out fees. Say goodbye to the $1.99 fee for Instant Pay. While not a huge amount, withdraw your earnings enough and those fees really start to add up.

Lastly, if you’re the multi-app type like me, moonlighting with other services like Instacart or Lyft, DasherDirect allows you to treat your DoorDash earnings like you would a bank account – but more convenient.

Pros and Cons of Using the DasherDirect Card

DasherDirect Pros

No Cash Out Fees: Immediate access to earnings without the usual $1.99 fee.

Cash Back: Initially 10% on gas, now 2% at select stations and stores.

Dedicated App: Easy balance checks and fund transfers.

Separate Earnings Account: Simplifies saving, especially for tax purposes.

DasherDirect Cons

Payout Flexibility: Once chosen, all earnings go to DasherDirect, making fund diversification challenging.

Gas Station Balance Requirement: Need a significant balance (often around $100) to use at some stations.

Changing Incentives: Cash back reduction from 10% to 2% was a notable drawback.

DasherDirect offers notable benefits, particularly for avoiding cash out fees, but requires consideration of payout preferences and maintaining a certain balance for optimal usage.

Is The DasherDirect Card Worth It Recommendation & Verdict

The DasherDirect card, at its core, is tailor-made for Dashers seeking to optimize their earnings and have swift access to their money.

It’s especially advantageous for those who often find themselves itching to cash out quickly and regularly, as it helps sidestep the recurring $1.99 fee.

The added perks, like cash back at gas stations, further sweeten the deal, though it’s worth noting that the previous enticing 10% offer has been reduced.

However, for Dashers who prefer the simplicity of consolidated earnings from multiple gig platforms, or those who don’t mind waiting for the standard transfer duration, the DasherDirect card might add an extra layer of complication without much tangible benefit.

Also, if you’re not dashing frequently or are sporadic in your dashing patterns, the nuances of maintaining the DasherDirect account—like the specific gas station requirements—may feel more cumbersome than beneficial.

In summation, if you’re a regular Dasher who is laser-focused on maximizing immediate earnings and capitalizing on cashback perks, DasherDirect could be a valuable asset. But if you’re looking for simplicity and have diverse gig income streams, sticking to a traditional bank account might be the more straightforward route.

  1. When moving funds from the card available to the “GOAL” section as specified in the app, the Dasher Direct card DOES NOT provide a method in case of an emergency to just as easily move the same funds right back into the available section without delay just as there was no delay moving funds into the so-called “GOAL” section. …talk about stupid (or was that intentional …if so, thats wrong)

    Reply
    • I’m going through that now. Did you get your money back from the “goal” area? How do you use that money? So frustrating

      Reply
    • Ok I found it… go to “move funds” from the main screen (scroll down)and select the account goals and move funds back to main account.. this will allow you to put the money back from “goals” instantly

    • I was just told today 3 weeks from the day you ordered it. Have you ever heard of a card taking 3 weeks to be mailed to you? I DONT THINK SO!! We can drive our cars put wear & tear on them plus all the miles you drive & make door dash lots of money which I’m sure Door dash gets their money that day. But you have to wait 3 weeks for your card. Plus you have to work one week before you can transfer your money onto another card ,Then wait 2 days (business days mon-fri only) to get any money. And Door Dash only pays $2.50, Watch out when you drive more miles your pay is supposed to go up, Good luck on that. Or if restaurants are closed after you received an order. Door dash don’t pay much on that either. How much money Door dash makes you would think they would pay more & make sure you can get to your own money the same day. It only takes a card to be made and sent out to you in 3 to 5 days sometimes 7 days. I would like to know why Door Dash takes three weeks? It’s like they do it on purpose!

    • It took a little less then 2 weeks for me but or mask runs really slow cause we don’t always have a mailman in our neighborhood because if staffing shortage

  3. I’m not sure if this is still the question at hand but after some trial and error I found a way to get gas with your virtual card. If there is a wawa gas station near you go online and buy an e-gift card from their website. You can use your virtual card to do this. Once the e-gift card is sent to your email you can open it up and there is a barcode for the cashier to scan. Works just like a gift card would. You can use it to buy gas or whatever else you want in the store. Another thing I had to do while I waited for my physical card is, well of course, eat. So I linked my virtual card to the McDonald’s app and ordered all my food through the mobile order feature inside of the app. That way you atleast have gas and food until your card comes. Hope this was helpful!

  4. I have the Virtual Card until my actual card shows up. I want to transfer the funds on it into my bank account. Can I do that? Is there a way to do that, because I thought it would be easy, but I can’t seem to do it….

  5. If Visa charges $4.95 per re-load then it is not free. Each and every time you have to add on $5 to get money loaded onto it? That could add up fast. I’m shocked Door Dasher is not only promoting this but claiming there are no fees associated with getting your money. 🙁 False advertising. 🙁

  6. I have 17 Door Dash pays on my account so far and don’t see any fees associated with the money being sent to be put on the card. I’m still waiting for the physical card to show up in the mail and it has been over two weeks now. And yes you can transfer the money to your bank account, I have tested this option already. It took about 2 or 3 business days though.

    • How do I add cash onto the dasher direct card? I have the physical card and the looked at the participating ATMs but there’s no deposit button when I insert card! Please help I need the money on my card in time for the withdrawal

  7. If you have any other means for banking…USE IT! I understand how convenient it is to get paid after a Dash and the 2% cash back on gas is awesome. However, if you ever have any issues (a failed bill pay, unrecognized transaction, etc.), there is absolutely no one that you can contact. Yes, they have a “need more help” button when you look for help in the app…BUT…BUT, the number that they route you to (during their business hours) goes to Door Dash driver support (not Dasher Direct). MIRACULOUSLY, once they have closed for business, all of a sudden they have the correct phone number only for them to tell you that they are closed. It is absolute BS. You just have to hope that whatever issue there is automatically will fix itself.

  10. Thinking about getting this; cash back for gas & no DirectPay fee would be great. But it sounds like dashers can’t access this money for weeks after enrolling?? Is it possible to VENMO yourself from your virtual DasherDirect?

  13. @Tim each dash goes onto card immediately after you complete dash. One dash is not one order. Each dash is the complete start to end dash time, then it goes straight to your dasher direct Visa card for use.

  14. At almost every gas station you have to have at least $75 balance on the card for it to work because they put a $75 hold on it this is per Dasher direct customer service

  15. DoorDash seriously needs to up their base rates. I’m sorry but gas is $4-$5 a gal. A $3 order plus possible $2 tip isn’t even worth my time not to mention the wear and tear on my car.
