The internet has revolutionized the world of coupons. You no longer have to present a piece of paper to get a discount. Instead, you can just type in a code or scan an image from your smartphone. Tech companies have jumped at the new types of marketing this coupon revolution offers, offering new and existing customers all sorts of discounts.
One company that exemplifies this new type of marketing strategy is Lyft.
Using their app, social media, and website, they offer both riders and drivers a variety of coupon codes that give discounts and even the chance to earn cash. Because the scale of these discounts is so large, we’ve created this guide to help you get oriented.
Whether you’ve never taken a Lyft ride or have been using the service for years, you’ll find something in this article that can help you save (or earn) the next time you ride. The same is true for drivers both new and veteran, who have many chances to boost their income through the promotions below.
How to Use This Guide
Because the types of promotions vary based on whether you’re a rider or driver (and based on whether you’re a new or existing user), we’ve broken this guide down into five sections:
- Lyft Promo Codes for New Users
- Lyft Promo Codes for Existing Users
- Lyft Referral Bonus for New Drivers
- Lyft Driver Referral Program
- Lyft Power Driver Bonus
Feel free to click on one of the links above to skip to the section most relevant to you. And, of course, if you both drive for and use Lyft, you can also mix and match the promos for the best discounts.
Let’s start with the promos that are available to new passengers. If you’ve never taken a Lyft ride before, then you have a lot of opportunities to get free Lyft rides. There are a variety of ways you can get the coupon codes necessary for free ride credit. The first place to look is on the official Lyft promo code page. This page offers the following discounts:
- 20LYFTPROMO — $2 credit per ride for 10 rides
- NEWUSER10 — $5 credit per ride for 2 rides
- LYFTCOUPON9 — $3 credit per ride for 3 rides
To get these discounts, all you have to do is enter the code in the “Promos” section of the Lyft app. You can learn more about how to do that in our Lyft Promo Code Guide.
Beyond these codes, you can also get a discount by using a referral code from another Lyft user. This could be a code from a friend who uses Lyft or even a code you find on a site like Reddit. You apply all the codes in the same way: by typing them into the Lyft app “Promos” section.
Note that these promotions are only available to new customers who have never taken a Lyft ride before. If you have taken a Lyft ride, then you won’t be able to use any of these discounts. Don’t worry, though. There are still passenger promotions available to you as an existing Lyft rider. You just have to a little more creative.
If you already use Lyft, it might seem like you’re out of luck when it comes to getting free Lyft credit. Certainly, there aren’t as many discounts available to you when you already use the app. However, they are still out there, provided you’re willing to do a bit of work to find or get them.
To start, Lyft will sometimes offer promos to existing users via the Lyft app or via email. If the promo is being offered in the app, you’ll see a notification for it when you open the app. If it’s an email promo, then it will appear in your inbox.
Be sure to use these promos as quickly as possible, as they usually have an expiration date. The nature of these discounts varies, but they can sometimes be quite large (we’ve seen 50 percent off Lyft rides in the past).
If you don’t want to wait around for Lyft to send you discounts, you can also take a more proactive approach. Every Lyft user has a unique promo code that you can send to friends who have never used the Lyft app before. When your friend uses this promo code to take their first Lyft ride, both of you will receive Lyft credit. The amount you and your friend will get depends on your city, but these promos can add up fast, especially if you post them on your social media.

When you become a Lyft driver, you have a lot of opportunities to earn sweet bonuses when you sign up to drive. These bonuses are based largely on the number of rides you give during your first few weeks as a driver. The official Lyft bonuses are as follows:
- $50 bonus — Give 20 rides in your first 30 days as a driver
- $100 bonus — Give 50 rides in your first 30 days as a driver
- $200 bonus — Give 100 rides in your first 30 days as a driver
As you can see, the bonuses exist to incentivize new drivers to give as many rides as possible. Lyft wants drivers available to meet demand, so offering bonuses in exchange for a certain number of rides makes sense as a business strategy.
Here’s a selection of cities where the sign-up bonus is available:
- New York City
- Orange County
- Los Angeles
- San Diego

If you’re already a Lyft driver, you still have a chance to earn extra cash. That’s right, we said cash, because that’s what you’ll get when you refer other drivers to the Lyft service.
For each driver that signs up using your unique promo code, you’ll get a cash payout. The driver who signs up will also receive a bonus, making the program worthwhile for both of you.
These promo codes work much like the referral codes for new riders that we discussed above. The main difference is that the new driver will need to enter the code when filling out their Lyft application. Alternatively, they can use a custom sign-up link, which you can send using the Lyft app.
To learn more about how this process works, have a look at our guide to Lyft driver referral codes.
The final promotion to discuss is one that exists on an ongoing basis for Lyft drivers. No matter how long you’ve been driving for the platform, the Lyft Power Driver Bonus is available to you. Note that eligibility varies based on your city (not all cities have the program). You can see if you’re eligible for the program by logging into your Lyft account. If the program does exist where you are, then it’s a chance to boost your earnings.
The amount you’ll receive varies, but the qualifications for receiving the bonus are much the same across cities:
- Have a vehicle that’s model year 2011 or newer
- Give a minimum number of rides in a week
- Give a certain number of peak rides (which are rides given when demand for the Lyft service is highest)
- Maintain at least a 90 percent acceptance rate
