Uber Eats credits are in-app credits that you can apply to your Uber Eats orders.
Other than purchasing them yourself, friends can gift you Uber Eats credits, and you can even earn them for free!
Here’s what you need to know about Uber credits.

What are Uber Eats Credits?
An Uber Eats credit is a monetary amount added to your in-app wallet.
Officially called Uber Cash, Uber Eats credits stay in your Uber account forever, and they can be applied to any restaurant, grocery, or delivery order.
How Does Uber Credit Work?
It can be useful to think of Uber credit as store or airline credit that you can use whenever you purchase something from that specific store or airline.
You may use your Uber credit for eligible purchases on Uber but nowhere else.
Once you load your Uber account with Uber cash credit, you can use that credit forever.
When ordering anything on Uber, your Uber credit can be applied to cover the total or partial cost of the order.
Where Do I Find My Uber Eats Credit?
Here is how to find your Uber Eats credits:
- Open your Uber Eats app.
- Click on “Account” at the bottom of the screen.
- Tap on “Wallet.”
- You will see your Uber Cash balance.
Do Uber Eats Credits Automatically Apply?
Yes.
By default, Uber will automatically apply your Uber Eats credits to your orders.
If your Uber Cash balance is enough to completely cover the cost of your order, Uber won’t charge your credit card.
On the other hand, if your Uber Cash balance isn’t enough to pay for your delivery, Uber will still automatically apply your balance to your order.
It will then give you the option of refilling your Uber Cash balance or charging your primary payment method for the rest of the total.
For example, if your order costs $10, and you have an Uber Cash balance of $5, Uber will apply your cash balance and charge your credit card for the other $5.
There is one exception to this rule.
If you have a business account for employee travel and office food delivery, Uber Cash credits won’t automatically apply to your orders.
Users can always choose to toggle Uber Cash credits on or off when making an order.
On the checkout page, you’ll see your payment method at the bottom of the screen.
By default, it will be Uber Cash if you have enough Uber credits.
Click on the payment method to toggle Uber Cash on or off or to select another payment method.
How to Use Uber Credits for Rides and Food
To use Uber credits for rides and food, you’ll need to first load your Uber Cash balance with a monetary amount.
There are a few ways to do that, which I explain below.
A cool thing about Uber Cash is that when you purchase Uber Cash or load a gift card, your balance syncs between the Uber and Uber Eats apps.
That means that even if you purchase Uber Cash on Uber Eats, you can use that balance to order rides.
Once you’ve filled up your Uber cash balance, proceed to order a ride or food, as you would normally do.
Since Uber Eats credits automatically apply to your orders, you won’t have to do anything special to use your Uber Eats credits for Uber Eats deliveries.
The same applies to Uber rides, but you need to make sure you are signed in to the same account on the Uber app, with the same email address and phone number as you used on Uber Eats.
Otherwise, your Uber Eats balance won’t show up in the Uber app.
Do Uber Eats Credits Expire?
Sometimes. If you purchase Uber Cash credits or receive a gift card, your Uber Cash balance will never expire.
However, if you earned credits by referring friends to Uber Eats, your credits will expire after three months if you don’t use them.
Amex reward credits expire after each month.
How to Get Uber Credits
There are several ways to earn Uber Eats credits.
While many people reload their Uber Cash wallets upfront, you can also get free credits by referring members to Uber Eats.
Furthermore, your credit card issuer may provide you with free Uber Eats credits.
1. How to Earn Credits Through Uber Eats Referrals
You can earn $10 in Uber Eats credits by referring a friend.
Open your Uber Eats app and click on “Account” at the bottom of the screen.
Scroll down to see a banner that says, “Get $10 Off Your Order.”
Click on it to see your special referral code and share it with friends.
When a friend opens a new account with Uber Eats and makes an order using your referral code, you’ll receive $10 in Uber Eats credits that will automatically apply to your next food delivery order.
This type of credit expires after three months.
2. Buy Uber Eats Credits
The easiest way to get Uber Eats credits is to buy them.
This is popular when using Uber for events.
You can use a credit card, PayPal, or another supported payment method.
To do that, click on “Account” at the bottom of the screen, and then tap on “Wallet.”
You’ll see your Uber Cash balance.
Tap on “Add Funds” to load your Uber Cash balance.
You can make a one-time purchase or set up recurring payments so your Uber Cash balance never goes below $10.
3. Uber Eats Gift Cards
Uber Eats gift cards are available online and at select retailers.
You can purchase Uber gift cards for yourself or a friend.
If someone sends you an Uber gift card, you can load it onto your Uber Cash balance by going to your Wallet and clicking on “Add Funds.”
Then, tap on “Gift Card” and enter the gift card code.
4. American Express Platinum Uber Credits
American Express provides Gold and Platinum card members with Uber rewards every month.
If you are an American Express Gold card member, you will get $10 in Uber Cash added to your balance automatically every month.
You can use your Amex card rewards for any Uber Eats delivery or Uber ride – the choice is yours.
If you are an American Express Platinum card member, you will earn $15 in Uber rewards every month, applicable to all eligible purchases on Uber and Uber Eats.
Any Uber Eats credit you get from your Amex card is in addition to any airline fee credit or other rewards American Express provides its cardholders.
Troubleshooting: Uber Eats Credits Not Working
It’s rare for Uber Eats credits not to work.
If you can’t order with your Uber Eats credits, you might need to enter another payment method as a backup.
Your credit card may have expired, and Uber often requires a backup payment method in case the cost of your order exceeds your Uber Cash balance.
If you’re trying to use your Amex credit, but it’s not showing up, make sure you have your Amex card added as your payment method on Uber.
Your Uber Eats credits may also have expired, in which case they will no longer appear in your account, even if they were there the day before.
Remember, Amex credits expire after the month is over, and referral credits expire after three months.
If you’re trying to purchase Uber Eats credits, and it’s not working, make sure your payment method has sufficient funds to make the purchase.
If you’re loading a gift card, make sure you entered the correct code.
Final Thoughts
Another way to get Uber Eats credits is by requesting a refund for orders that never arrived or arrived damaged.
When that happens, Uber will typically give you the option of getting a refund to your original payment method, which can take a few days, or to your Uber Cash balance, which is immediate.
In any case, Uber Eats credits are a great way to plan and manage your budget and get free food.
