Are you an Uber customer who’s looking for a new and convenient way to order your groceries?

Forget about the other grocery delivery services out there – you’ll be happy to know that Uber offers grocery delivery through its Uber Eats service.

In this blog post, we’ll explain the process of ordering using Uber Eats grocery delivery and provide a few tips on how to make the most of this service.

Does Uber Eats Offer Grocery Delivery?

Yes, Uber Eats has expanded beyond the restaurant and fast food delivery to offer Uber users a grocery delivery service.

From everyday needs to 7-11 food items, you can use Uber as your online grocery.

Where Does Uber Eats Offer Grocery Delivery?

Uber Eats first rolled out the grocery store delivery service in select cities in Canada and Latin America.

However, the program has experienced incredible growth, and it is now available in more than 400 cities and towns in the United States, including New York City and San Francisco.

More than 1,200 stores are available through its partnership with Albertsons Companies, Inc.

What Can You Have Delivered?

The exact stores and food options vary from city to city.

You can usually find everything you would typically buy from your beloved local grocers, including cleaning items, meat, cookies, drinks, cereals, and other food items.

Sometimes, you may only find small convenience stores available through the delivery service, like 7-11 or Shell gas station stores.

How Does Uber Eats Grocery Delivery Work?

Browsing and Selecting Grocery Items

Grocery delivery on Uber Eats works pretty much the same as restaurant delivery.

When you open the Uber Eats app, you will see a “Grocery” or “Convenience” option if the service is available in your area.

Simply click on that option and browse available stores.

You may see supermarket chains, local grocers, 7-11s, Chevron or Shell gas station stores, and other shops.

Depending on your location, you may also see pharmacies in the Uber app, such as CVS pharmacies or Walgreens.

You’ll be able to order OTC medications, beauty products, and other pharmacy products.

Select a shop you want to order from, and browse available items.

The items may be divided into categories, such as “Cereals and Bread” or “Alcohol,” to make the online grocery shopping experience easier.

Find items you need and add them to your cart.

Once you have selected all the items you need, proceed to checkout.

Checking Out

You can pay online or in the Uber app using one of your added payment methods.

For example, you can pay with a debit card, credit card, PayPal, or Uber Cash.

If you have Uber Cash credits from Uber Eats referrals, you should be able to pay with that as well.

Or, you can use an Uber gift card.

Once you pay for and place your order, Uber will send the order to an independent contractor, who will go to the store and do your shopping for you.

The worker will go to the store to get your items and then bring your groceries to your specified delivery address.

Getting Your Order

You can track the order as it is ongoing, just like you can with a regular Uber Eats order.

You’ll be able to communicate with your delivery person, and they may contact you if a particular product is out of stock.

That way, you can help them choose a suitable replacement.

In some cities, Uber Eats offers a grocery pickup option.

If you place a pickup order, you will have to go to the store yourself and pick up your completed order.

Uber Eats offers both instant and scheduled grocery delivery orders.

Scheduling orders allows you to get your order at a time more convenient for you.

You can schedule an order up to a week in advance, but only at times when the store is open.

Uber Eats Grocery Delivery vs. Other Grocery Delivery Services

Uber Eats started offering a grocery delivery service to compete with other services, like Amazon Fresh and Instacart.

Nevertheless, some critical differences between Uber Eats and apps or services that focus exclusively on grocery delivery.

Main Similarities

On both Uber Eats and Amazon Fresh or Instacart, you can order fresh products, including fruits and vegetables, to be delivered straight to your door.

You can either have them dropped off with contactless delivery or meet the delivery person yourself.

Also, like on Amazon Fresh and Instacart, you can either order products to be delivered as soon as possible or schedule them in advance.

Main Differences

There are several differences between Uber Eats and major grocery delivery services, including Instacart, Walmart Express Delivery, and the delivery services offered by individual supermarkets like Aldi’s delivery service and Kroger delivery.

The main difference is the variety of stores available.

On Uber Eats, you can find Albertsons, CVS, 7-11, Shell, Chevron, and many others, including local establishments in your area.

On the other hand, when ordering on Amazon Fresh, all your products will be coming from the Amazon Fresh store.

If you are ordering from Walmart, you can only purchase products in stock at Walmart.

Uber Eats offers more flexibility.

If you don’t find what you are looking for in one store, you can browse the other available stores.

Even when compared to Instacart, the exact stores vary.

Finally, if you are ordering from your local grocery store, you may have to call them and give them a list of products you want.

Uber Eats gives you a lot more flexibility.

You can browse available products without pressure, compare the prices of different brands, compare prices between various stores, and order when you are ready.

What Does Uber Eats Grocery Delivery Cost?

When you place a delivery order on Uber Eats, you will have to pay a small delivery fee.

The exact price varies, depending on factors such as the store you are ordering from, your location, and the store’s distance from you.

Often, the delivery fee is just $1-2, but it can also go up a lot higher than that.

Why Did Uber Get Into Grocery Delivery With Cornershop?

Uber first partnered with Cornershop to offer grocery delivery to its customers due to competition from Instacart and DoorDash.

Cornershop is an app that offers grocery delivery services in many countries, and the partnership allowed Uber to match users with delivery workers.

At first, Uber acquired a majority stake in Cornershop, intending to gain expertise in the grocery delivery market.

In 2021, Uber fully acquired Cornershop, but it remains a separate app.

Either way, the Cornershop acquisition allows Uber to maintain its leading position in the food delivery industry and stay one step ahead of DoorDash, which now also offers grocery delivery services.

How to Schedule a Grocery Delivery With Cornershop

Instead of placing a grocery order on Uber Eats, you can download the Cornershop app and use that instead.

While the app is different, the process is mostly the same.

Keep in mind that when using Cornershop, you can only order groceries.

Once you’ve downloaded Cornershop and registered or signed in, you can browse available supermarkets, select items, and check out.

When checking out, you will see the option to schedule your delivery.

Using Cornershop, you can schedule an order for a later time the same day or the following day.

Should You Tip Uber Eats Grocery Delivery Drivers?

vector graphic showing the uber eats tipping amount to give a driver

There is no requirement to tip your Uber Eats grocery delivery driver, just like you don’t have to tip your regular Uber Eats delivery person or your Uber driver.

However, tips are always appreciated, as grocery drivers on Uber work hard, often delivering for many hours in a row.

You can tip in the app, just like with any other Uber Eats order.

That way, you can pay with your credit card, PayPal, or any other payment method attached to your Uber Eats account.

Alternatively, you can give the driver a tip in cash.

Delivery workers often appreciate cash tips more because it gives them pocket money that they can spend instantly.

Save on Uber Eats Grocery Delivery With an Uber Eats Pass

If you order groceries or restaurant meals on Uber Eats frequently, you may want to consider signing up for Uber One, which replaced Eats Pass in 2021.

The Uber Eats Pass was a program available in the United States and most of Canada that allowed users to get free deliveries on Uber Eats orders for a $9.99/monthly subscription.

It also gave members a 5% discount on eligible orders.

The new Uber monthly pass, which costs $9.99/month or $99/year, offers similar perks.

It gives members a 5% discount on eligible Uber rides, Uber Eats deliveries, and Uber Eats pickup orders.

There is a $15 minimum for restaurant orders and a $30 minimum for grocery orders to get that discount.

It also allows users to order groceries with a $0 delivery fee.

You’ll even get a $5 Uber Cash bonus if your Uber Eats order comes later than the latest estimated delivery time, as well as premium support.

Final Thoughts

Uber Eats is a simple and convenient way to do your grocery shopping.

You don’t have to leave your home or even speak to anyone on the phone, and you can pay with a credit card, debit card, or PayPal.
