Zipcar Requirements: How It Works And What You Need To Drive

What is Zipcar and what are the Zipcar requirements for membership?

Even before the rise of rideshare companies such as Uber and Lyft, Zipcar has been providing a convenient and unique transportation service to passengers worldwide.

Zipcar members have easy access to a car without actually having to own one, cutting down on both costs and hassle.

But what does it take to use Zipcar? Today we’re breaking down everything you need to know about the service, including essential Zipcar requirements.

Zipcar Requirements: How to Become a Member

1. What is Zipcar?

Zipcar is a car rental service that allows drivers to reserve a vehicle at an hourly rate. And Zipcar comes in much cheaper than regular rental car companies.

Before Uber, Lyft, and other rideshare services dominated the road, Zipcar was one of the most convenient ways for non-car owners to get around.

In short, Zipcar provides a ride without the maintenance hassle car owners have to deal with.

2. How does Zipcar work?

Zipcar operates on a subscription model, and requires a membership registration in order to enjoy its benefits.

Vehicles are available all over the globe, in many different cities. They’re popular on college campuses, but available in multiple locations as well.

Members can rent a car from an hour up to seven days. Members pick up cars from designated parking lots and use a special “Zipcard” to unlock a car after they’ve reserved it. The member can then drive the car anywhere as long as it’s reserved under their name.

The driver should then return the car to the designated spot after their reservation is over and use the Zipcard or the app to lock the car again.

Most cities require round trips, which means a driver must return the car to the location they got it from. Some cities, however, allow one-way trips wherein drivers can leave the car on a different Zipcar designated parking slot.

3. How to register as a Zipcar member?

In order to qualify as a Zipcar member, the following requirements must be met:

  • 21 years old or older; 18 to 20-year-olds can join provided they are affiliated with a college or university
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license; Zipcar also accepts non-US driver’s license
  • Must have a clean driving record
  • Must accept Zipcar terms and conditions

Interested and qualified individuals can apply online and expect their Zipcar card delivery within three to seven days once approved. Companies can also opt to register to use Zipcar vehicles for business purposes.

4. How much is the cost of using Zipcar?

The application fee is $25 and the Zipcar membership fee is either $7 per month or $70 per year. Hourly rental rates are about $10-12 depending on the car model.

Both insurance and gas fees are already included in the rental rate, so the driver won’t need to shell out extra for those.

5. What are the benefits of using Zipcar?

Zipcar is a good option for those who only drive on occasion. It provides a convenient ride when needed without having to worry about the maintenance, insurance, and other trouble car owners deal with.

Another plus is even those under 25 years of age can already sign up to rent a car. Also, if a person only needs the car for a couple of hours, hourly rates are relatively affordable than other rental options. Even businesses can benefit from using Zipcar as it eliminates their need to acquire a company car, yet gives users access to a vehicle when needed.

Not being able to own a car doesn’t seem to be a big deal these days. With several rideshare app options plus car rental companies such as Zipcar, it’s much easier to get around without having to buy a car.

rideshare and car rentals are great options for people who don’t want to face all the responsibilities and bills that come with owning a car and yet, will still enjoy driving one whenever needed.
