Tom, my 11-year-old son is an avid scooterist and started riding electric scooters back in 2019. I asked him to test 25 models, each a day.

After gearing up, we chose the same riding surface for each of the scooters and we can happily let you know our findings in this post.

1. Razor E100: The Best Overall electric scooter under $200

Razor E100

Best For: Those looking for e-scooters under $200

Top Features:

  • 10 mph
  • Has a small manual kickoff to 3 mph
Razor E100 product image

The Razor E100 e-scooter is one of the most common electric scooters that parents buy for their kids.

In fact, there are tons of tutorials on YouTube and blog posts that show how you can troubleshoot this model, customize it, or even upgrade some of its components.

Basically, with the Razor E100, you are looking into one of the most versatile models you can wish your lovely kid to have.

Not only that, but this scooter comes in different colors to make it easier to pick the ride you deem the best.

Using our usual GPS tracker, Tom hit a top speed of 9.6 miles per hour at our testing grounds.

While the manufacturer claims the scooter can hit a top speed of 10 miles per hour, we didn’t go past 9.6 mph but then the speed, as well as the range, depends on different factors such as the rider’s weight, riding conditions, and to some extent their experience.

While riding at a top speed of 4 miles per hour, we recorded a top range of 5.2 miles.

Riding at 2 miles per hour, we hit a top range of 6.3 miles.

This scooter is rated to hit a top range of 6.5 miles, with the rider having a riding time of up to 40 minutes before the battery asks for more juice.

Rated to carry kids and teens weighing up to 120 lbs, you can be sure that this ride has the perfect load capacity for most kids.

Razor E100 Features

One of the primary reasons we love the E100 is that it features 8-inch solid tires.

As you perhaps are aware, most kids aren’t as cautious and it would be easy for them to encounter flats in the event that this Razor e-scooter featured pneumatic tires.

Unlike the hub motors in most adult electric scooters, the E100 features a 100W chain-driven motor.

To get this motor engaged, it’s advisable that the rider kicks it to 3 miles per hour.

The accelerator is in the form of a twist throttle, and we find it a great choice since twist throttles don’t have a dead zone as you would expect in a thumb throttle.

The handlebars are adjustable, which gives kids of different sizes to have the convenience they can think of.

With a front brake, your kid will definitely be safe with such a scooter.

The 24V rechargeable lead acid battery is strategically positioned, which makes replacing it not a so-difficulty affair.

The carbon steel frame is one of the sturdiest and this means riders within its recommended load capacity won’t have any issues at all about stability.

The battery, motor, and carbon steel frame make the Razor E100 scooter weigh 31 lbs (14 kg), which is a manageable weight for most teens who wish to carry their rides.

Razor E100 Pros

  • Great manufacturing design
  • The kick-start feature adds to the safety of kids
  • The lights flicker to show that the throttle has been activated. A convenient feature for the rider
  • The scooter comes with a 90-day warranty, which is awesome.

Cons

  • Since the E100 comes with a lead-acid battery, it takes longer to charge (for us, it took between 12 to 14 hours to fully charge)

2. Ninebot Zing C8: Lightest electric scooter under 200

Ninebot Zing C8

Best For: Those looking for a light e-scooter

Top Features:

  • Lightweight and foldable
  • 130W motor
  • 8.7 mph
Ninebot Zing C8

If not for the small wheel size, then we would have ranked the Segway Ninebot C8 electric scooter position one.

One of the most adorable features of the C8 is that it weighs only 17.4 lbs (7.9 kg), which is 13.6 lbs lighter than Razor E100.

Ideal for kids who are between 114 cm (3ft 9 inches) to 145 cm (4ft 9 inches), the Segway C8 offers an adjustable height feature to provide riders of different heights with the ability to choose the weight that best fits them.

With a 180W hub motor, the C8 is rated to hit a top speed of 10 miles per hour.

However, the best speed Tom recorded was 9.8 miles per hour (15.8 km/h). Nevertheless, he could have hit more if he was lighter.

Featuring three riding modes (Safe, Cruise, and Turbo), your kid may adjust the riding mode to that which feels more comfortable at a particular moment.

For instance, if they would like to hit a higher range, then the Safe mode is their best choice.

Cruise mode offers balanced worlds of range and speed, while Turbo gives the fastest top speed.

When riding in the Safe mode, TOM recorded a top range of exactly 6 miles (9.7km) before the battery died.

The 54Wh battery is a dependable one and we loved it even more when the scooter fully charged in just 3 hours.

Segway Ninebot Zing C8 Features

With a spring damper as the shock absorption mechanism, rides of the Zing C8 have their comfort in place.

The braking method is both mechanical and electrical, which makes halting as buttery smooth as expected.

The solid 6-inch tires are made of high-quality synthetic rubber, which enhances longevity and better resistance to flats.

My son didn’t like how these tires feel small and it’s understandable since the ground clearance isn’t as great as the Razor E100 we mentioned above.

The manufacturer recommends that kids aged between 6 and 12 years can hassle-freely ride this scooter, provided they are within 44 to 110 pounds weight limit.

From the top of the handle to its base, we noticed that it measures 95 cm. It’s great to know this before purchasing the scooter so that you may judge if it fits your kid or not.

We also loved the fact that this is an electric kick scooter. This means should the battery die while riding, you can use it as a regular kick scooter.

Ninebot C8 Pros

  • One of the lightest electric scooters in its class
  • Can be used as a kick scooter when the battery runs out of juice
  • Faster charging time than most electric scooters getting sold below $200
  • With shock absorption, the ride quality feels great
  • 180-day warranty for some parts and a year limited warranty

Cons

  • The 6-inch solid tires are small for some riders.

3. Razor Power Core 24V: Greatest performance electric scooter for under $200

Razor Power Core 24V

Top Features:

  • 100 W motor
  • 24V battery
  • Carries upto 120lbs
Razor Power Core 24V product image

The Razor Power Core 24V electric scooter under $200 for kids is one of the most unique.

Featuring dual 12V batteries, this scooter can hit a top range of 11 miles or up to 60 minutes before the battery dies.

While testing the range, TOM recorded 10.6 miles as our best. The Power Core 24V also features a 100W hub motor, which pushes the top speed up to 11 miles per hour.

Our top-tested GPS-tracked speed was 10.8 miles per hour, with the potential to hit the rated should Tom have been lighter.

Featuring a pneumatic tire at the front and an airless one at the rear, the Razor Power Core 24V scooter offers the rider a more diversified risk.

There is no worry about poor ride quality thanks to the air-filled tire at the front and no worry about flats since the rear tire is the solid type.

Weighing 55 lbs, the Power Core 24V is one of the heaviest e scooters under $200.

There are really very few kids who can lift this scooter. As you purpose to buy one, be sure that your kid won’t need to carry it.

Power Core 24V Features

With a twist grip throttle, the Power Core 24V $200 electric scooter feels comfortable to the little ones when they need to accelerate.

Unlike some Razor models, the Core also comes with a retractable kickstand, which is a feature that comes handy for most kids.

Featuring a rear-wheel-drive ability, there is the assurance that the front tire won’t keep on spinning, with the scooter raised above the ground.

The brake caliper is on the front, which is a strategic position for the kids that can ride the scooter.

Razor Power Core 24V Pros

  • The dual batteries help in adding to more range
  • A pneumatic tire at the front and an airless one at the rear help in diversifying the risk of poor ride quality and flats
  • Faster than most of the riders in its class
  • Stable ride quality.

Cons

  • Too heavy for kids
  • The Lower Center of Gravity is inconvenient for some riders.

To whom are $200 electric scooters great for?

Unless you are an adult who is feathery light, e-scooters under $200 are perfect for kids.

This is in consideration with the rated load capacities, where most of these scooters are rated to carry a top weight limit of 120 lbs.

Again, if you are past the rated load capacity, you will be stressing the motor and could potentially break the stem of the scooter.

We have recommended some budget electric scooters for adults so that you may get one that will bear your weight.

How joyous could it feel when your ride your scooter alongside your beloved kid (winks)?

Buying Factors to Consider While Buying an Electric Scooter Under $200

1. Reliability

One of the things I hate the most is buying an ineffective product.

As you shop for an electric scooter for your little one maybe for a Christmas present, a birthday present, or just as a gift, getting a reliable one is a critical factor.

Among the consideration points for reliability is reading or watching the reviews from riders who have actually tested them.

You can as well read verified reviews on the merchants’ websites to see if there are known problems.

2. Safety

The worst that can happen is to have your little one getting involved in an electric scooter accident.

Getting an e-scooter that has reliable brakes is a primary point to consider.

Besides, if they are a beginner, getting a ride with the kick-to-start option is perfect.

That way, they will train themselves on how to get started with the throttle at relatively lower speeds.

3. Tires

Solid tires tend to be a great option for most kids’ electric scooters.

However, the ride quality isn’t as great as with the pneumatic type.

If you would love to have your kid enjoy both worlds, getting an e-scooter with a solid and air-filled tire is a great choice. The risk is properly diversified that way.
