How to Turn Off Speed Limit on Segway Ninebot [2 Actionable Tips]

Learn how to turn off speed limit on Segway Ninebot scooters, step-by-step, hacking the unit's software to make it go faster.

Key Takeaways

  • Segway Ninebot scooters have four modes, with Sport mode (S) allowing the highest speed of 15.5 mph (25km/h).
  • Switching to Sport Mode involves using the Segway Ninebot app to adjust speed settings.
  • Alternatively, hacking the scooter’s firmware with an app like XiaoFlasher can increase speeds but is risky and voids the warranty.
  • Modifications to speed limits should be done cautiously, as they can affect safety features like brakes and lead to dangerous situations.

Segway Ninebot Speed Limiter Removal

There are really only two simple ways to speed up a Segway Ninebot – switching the the fastest mode, or removing the governer with software.

1. Switch to the fastest mode

Most of the newest Segway Ninebot electric scooters come with 4 riding modes.

The ECO mode also referred to as the Economic Mode is the slowest and is perfect for newbie riders or those looking forward to getting the most range before the battery dies.

The maximum speed while riding at this mode is 10km/h (6 miles per hour).

Standard mode (D) is ideal for those riders looking forward to enjoying both worlds of moderate speed and range. Riding in this mode will get you to a maximum of 12 mph (20km/h).

There is also Pedestrian mode which is engaged via the mobile application of Segway Ninebot. You can turn it on when you want to stay at a top speed of 6km/h and turn it off when you want to go faster or slower from the said APP.

Lastly, there is the Sport mode (S). This riding speed mode is perfect for those who want to hit more speed, without worrying much about the range. It’s ideal for experienced riders only.

To turn off any speed limitations on your Segway Ninebot electric scooter, switch to the Sport (S) mode and you will ride at unlocked speeds of 15.5 mph (25km/h).

To switch to the Sport Mode, make sure that you have installed the APP on your phone. After that, switch on your Segway Ninebot electric scooter and connect the scooter to the APP.

On that Application, click on the Gear Icon (on your right) and then tap the ‘Speed Settings’ prompt. At this point, ensure that the slider is at its max.

Go back to your Ninebot Segway electric scooter and double-click the power button until you see the speed settings in the display.

  • When you don’t see any “S”, know that you are in the slowest mode.
  • When the “S” color is white, then you are in moderate speed mode.
  • If the “S” is red, then you are in Sport Mode.

At that point, the speed limit has been turned off.  To turn to a slower speed mode, then double-click the power button again and settle at the speed mode of your choice.

2. Hack the scooter with an APP (risky)

If you would like to ride your Segway Ninebot electric scooter to go faster than the unlocked speed (using the Sport Mode), then you can use an App to make it faster.

However, this is a risky move and will definitely make you void your warranty.

This hack is ideal for the Segway Ninebot Max G30 e-scooter and it involves a series of processes.

  1. Download the XiaoFlasher App from Google Play Store (ideal for Android devices only)
  2. Download the G30DRAGSTER.zip file but don’t unzip it just yet
  3. Turn on your Segway Ninebot scooter
  4. Open the XiaoFlasher App on your Android Device
  5. Click your scooter name on the APP
  6. Click “Change Region” on the APP and set it to “US 30KM/H)
  7. Click “Change Region” once more and select “Custom Serial”
  8. Enter the custom serial of your scooter
  9. Click “Select Zip File”
  10. Select the Zip File you downloaded above
  11. Click “Flash Selected ZIP file”
  12. Reboot your scooter and you will notice that you have successfully unlocked your Segway Ninebot Max G30 electric scooter.

Brett’s Take: Thoughts From an Expert

While technically possible, I suggest being careful, as standard safety features like the brakes work far less efficiently than they are supposed to when speeds are pushed past standard factory settings.

On the last Segway Ninebot that I modified, the brakes no longer worked, and I almost lost control after speeding down a hill uncontrollably.

I started getting the speed wobbles and almost ate it on the concrete. I also blew through a stopsign, right in front of a car.

While it was quite a thrill, I learned the hard way that day – safety features are designed for a reason. Pushing the limits can be dangerous and have severe consequences.

In Summary: How to turn off speed limit on Segway Ninebot

You can either turn off the speed limiter on a Segway Ninebot electric scooter by switching the speed settings to the fastest mode or going the risky way and flashing the scooter’s firmware to make it faster than what the fastest mode has to offer.
