With Uber readily available in over 700 global cities and counting, it’s fair to say that the technology company has become a household name around the world. Both Uber and Uber Eats are leaders in their industries, giving consumers the incredibly convenient features they crave — including a wide variety of cashless payment options. To make your checkout experience even better, you can make Uber Cash your preferred payment method and start saving money as you’re spending it.
Convenience isn’t always cheap. Food delivery often comes with high delivery fees, while ridesharing is notorious for notorious for surge pricing, which can cause fares to skyrocket. Luckily, Uber makes it easy for you to save up to 5% on these services just by keeping your Uber Cash balance loaded — no discount codes needed.
Keep reading to learn more about Uber Cash and how to start using it.
What Is Uber Cash?
Uber Cash is a type of store credit that can be used on any of the company’s services. Users can load up their balance at any time to pre-pay for any Uber rides or deliveries you may purchase in the future — including tips and associated fees. This way, you can pay when you have the money to do so and not worry about any unexpected transportation costs later.
Even JUMP bikes and scooters, which are owned by Uber, can be covered using this payment method.
Because Uber Cash can essentially be treated like real cash when you’re on the company’s apps, it never expires. You won’t have to worry about your money going to waste if you’re not a frequent Uber user, so its benefits can be useful to just about anyone.
The only caveat is that you can only use your Uber Cash in the country where you purchased it, since the company doesn’t manage currency conversions. For example, if you purchased Uber Cash in San Francisco, you won’t be able to use it in Paris and vice versa. While this doesn’t present a major issue by any means, it is something to remember if you’re planning to use Uber on a trip abroad.
Advantages of Uber Cash
Now that you’re aware of the only notable limit to Uber Cash, we’ll dive into the good stuff. The benefits definitely outweigh the downsides, as it allows you to manage your finances in more ways than one. Here are the three biggest advantages of using Uber Cash:
1. Instant Savings
If you’re confident that you’ll spend at least $25 on Uber services in the future — that could be 5, 10, 20, or even 100 years from now — there’s no reason not to use this feature. When you load or reload your balance, you immediately earn Uber Cash back. That’s essentially free money to cover your future transportation or dinner needs.
Here are the savings you can choose from:
- Receive $25 Uber Cash when you pay $24.50 (2% back)
- Receive $50 Uber Cash when you pay $48.50 (3% back)
- Receive $100 Uber Cash when you pay $95 (5% back)
These discounts aren’t one-time offers or limited-time deals, so you can be claiming Uber Cash back multiple times a week if you have the need for it.
2. Stacking Discounts
Using this payment method is a great way to double the discounts you’re getting. If you have a promotion applied to your next ride, nothing is stopping you from Uber Cash as your payment method when submitting your request.
As an example of how this can help you, imagine that you just received a 20% off promotion that will be applied to your next UberX ride. Before requesting, you choose to apply your balance, which you purchased in bulk to get your maximum 5% back savings. At the end of the day, you’ve saved a total of 25% off your ride total by stacking two discounts at once.
3. Easy Budgeting
Whether you’re traveling on a budget or tracking how much you’re spending on restaurant-made food, using Uber Cash is a great way to limit your own transportation or food delivery costs. You can load your balance with the maximum amount of money that you want to spend and stick to that budget in a given time frame.
If you’re trying to create a budget, loading up your balance can also give you insight into how much you’re really spending on Uber services.
How to Use Uber Cash
Uber Cash can easily be accessed on both of the company’s apps. However, while the Uber Eats app once allowed you to add funds and check your balance, some functions have been limited to the Uber app since more recent app updates. Here’s our full guide to navigating Uber Cash:
How to Add Funds
As we just mentioned, adding Uber Cash to your account is only possible through the Uber app at this time. However, once you have the proper app open, the process to add funds is incredibly straightforward.
Start by tapping on the app menu icon on the upper left corner and selecting the “Wallet” tab.
Make sure your preferred credit card, debit card, Venmo account, PayPal account, or Google Pay account is listed under “Payment Methods.” If not, tap “Add Payment Method” and follow the prompts to add it.
Head back to your primary “Wallet” page and tap “Add Funds.”
Tap “Select Payment” on the bottom right corner to choose your preferred payment method. Then, select how much you’d like to add to your account balance and tap “Confirm.”
Once complete, your balance will be loaded to your Uber account and ready to use for your next ride or meal.
Users also have the option to auto-refill their balance once it drops below $10. If you’re a frequent Uber user, this can save you the hassle of manually reloading your balance every time you run low.
To opt into this convenient option, all you need to do is head back to the “Wallet” tab, tap “Auto-Refill,” and select your reload amount and payment method. Then, tap “Update” to save your preferences.
Paying With Uber Cash
When you want to use your funds, follow one of these methods to make sure your credits have been applied:
- In the Uber app, type in your preferred pick-up and drop-off addresses, then select your preferred ride option. Tap on the payment method icon just beneath the Uber services list to make sure Uber Cash is toggled on. Once complete, you can submit your request as usual.
- In the Uber Eats app, select the restaurant of your choice and add the menu items of your choice. Then, tap “View Cart” to get to your checkout page. Scroll down to see if Uber Cash has been applied to your order total. If not, tap your payment method icon to select Uber Cash before checking out.
Checking Your Uber Cash Balance
It’s easy to forget how much you have left in your account after you’ve used it once or twice. Luckily, it’s easy to check how much you have left without going all the way to a checkout page. Simply head to your “Wallet” tab on the Uber app once again and your Uber Cash balance should be at the very top of the page.
These Uber credits are shared between both apps, so there’s no need to check separately for available Uber Eats cash.
Frequently Asked Questions
Uber Cash is a simple way to save on every trip or meal, without scouring the web for Uber promo codes. To learn more about this payment option, read these frequently asked questions:
1. Can I use Uber promo codes to pay for Uber Cash?
Uber does not have promo codes for you to use when paying for Uber Cash. However, if a promotion has been applied to a ride, you can still use Uber Cash to pay for that ride. This is essentially a simple way for you to stack discounts.
2. Is there any way to earn free Uber Cash?
Absolutely. Anyone can earn by enrolling in the free Uber Rewards program, which allows you to earn points for your purchases and even earn $5 Uber Cash when you reach certain milestones.
If you have a Visa card listed as a payment method in your Uber app, you likely qualify for the company’s Visa Local Offers program, which gives you free Uber Cash for shopping with eligible retailers. With the Uber credit card — which works just like any other credit card — you can actually get Uber Cash back with every dollar you spend.
Holding an American Express Platinum Card also gets you free Uber Cash every month, with no minimum purchase needed.
3. I don’t want to pay for Uber Cash or Uber services with my credit card. Can I pay with real cash?
While Uber has allowed cash payments in a few countries, including India and Kenya, cash is typically not a valid payment option for Uber Cash or any Uber services. Uber’s apps are largely designed as cashless platforms, so actual cash can usually only be used for Uber tipping — not for your ride or meal.
The only workaround you can use is purchasing Uber gift cards from a local store that carries them in cash. You can then redeem each gift card in the “Wallet” section of either app, and your balance will be loaded as Cash on Uber.
Tap Into Savings
Big savings and convenient payments are just a few taps away — just like your next ride or meal. This unique store credit option makes it easy for users to never pay full price on Uber services again, and certainly makes Uber stand out against Lyft for anyone on a budget.

In 2014 he created Uber Driver Diaries, which was the first blog by an Uber driver describing the highs and lows of driving as well as offering tips and tricks and information on the industry as a whole. In 2016 Ridester acquired the site, and Jonathan began writing full-time about the rideshare industry and the gig economy. He has also done extensive research into driver issues related to pay and working conditions.
