Uber Cars: Your Guide to the Various Types of Uber Cars

There are times when the standard Uber service is all you need. But what if you want something with added luxury or service? Rest easy — you have the option to choose between multiple types of Uber cars.

Uber started off with one high-end rideshare service — Uber Black. From there, it blossomed into a rideshare force to be reckoned with and now offers at least 17 different types of services. Twelve of those are directly related to reserving a rideshare vehicle in your city.

Today, we’ll explain every single Uber service so you know exactly which vehicle you’d like to book. We’ll tell you the differences between each service, how many people you can fit inside the vehicles, and links to additional information.

Types of Uber Cars

Uber gives you several options for different tiered services. There are different types of Uber services that fit whatever your need may be.

Some passengers may not care which type of vehicle they’re riding in, as long as it’s safe and gets them to their destination quickly.

Others may look for something more spacious and luxurious for a fancy night out on the town. And then, there are passengers who require additional assistance or service, like wheelchair accessible vehicles or vehicles equipped with car seats.

Vehicle options vary from city to city. You can see which services are available within the Uber app when you go to reserve your ride. You can also head to Uber’s city availability page and select your city to determine what services you have access to.

There are three different categories Uber’s services fall into — economy, premium, and specialized services. Let’s start with the entry-level economy services.

Overview:

Economy Uber Services

Uber’s economy services are the most affordable options on the platform. You can pick between Uber’s basic rideshare service — UberX — or you can opt for other services like Uber Comfort, UberXL, or UberPool.

UberX

UberX is the most popular rideshare option. UberX cars are the basic entry-level economy service. This is a great option for those who need an affordable Uber ride and don’t have a preference regarding the vehicle or size.

All drivers undergo training and background screening before they can drive. You can expect to ride in cars like a Toyota Prius, Honda Accord, or Ford Escape.

Uber Comfort

Uber Comfort offers passengers the same basic service as UberX, except in newer vehicles with slightly more space. This ride option is for riders who prefer more spacious vehicles with more head and legroom.

They’re perfect for riding with friends or family or when you return home from a long flight and need to relax in comfort. These cars are midsize vehicles with models like Toyota Camry, Honda Odyssey, or Chevrolet Tahoe.

UberXL

UberXL features larger vehicles that can accommodate more people and luggage. There are times when you need a larger vehicle with enough room to fit everyone in, like group outings or family adventures.

UberXL provides vehicles that are larger than both UberX and Uber Comfort. With this option, you’ll ride in vehicles like a Ford Explorer, Chevrolet Traverse, or GMC Acadia.

UberPool

Carpooling can help you save cash while reducing your carbon footprint. UberPool lets you reserve a vehicle with other riders going in the same direction.

You reserve your ride the same way you would with other Uber services, except you may pick up additional riders on the way. This might make your ride time slightly longer, but you’ll pay a fraction of the cost for other services.

Premium Uber Services

Uber’s premium services are fit for those who don’t mind spending extra money on luxury and comfort. The two main premium services are Uber Black and Uber Black SUV.

Uber Black

Uber Black was the first service Uber offered when it launched in 2011. A majority of the ridership transitioned to UberX. However, Uber Black still serves high-end clients who prefer luxury.

Uber Black provides higher-end vehicles with all-black exteriors and black, leather interiors. All vehicles are less than five years old and are driven by professional drivers.

This is the perfect option for when you want a luxury car to impress — think important business meetings, wedding functions, or other special occasions. Be prepared for top-of-the-line luxury sedans like an Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, or Mercedes-Benz.

Uber Black SUV

Uber Black SUV — or UberSUV — is the same professional black car service as Uber Black except with more space for you and your guests. You still have access to professional drivers and all-black luxury vehicles with leather interiors, but you can easily fit two more people in your ride.

You’ll ride in style in vehicles like a Chevrolet Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, or Lincoln Navigator.

Specialized Uber Services

Uber goes the extra mile to ensure the needs of every passenger are met. There are specialized services — like Uber WAV, Uber Assist, Uber Car Seat, and Uber Taxi — that make urban ridesharing accessible to everyone.

Uber WAV

Every Uber service can accommodate disabled passengers who use walkers, canes, folding wheelchairs, and other assistive devices. Uber WAV takes it one step further with wheelchair accessible vehicles.

This service is specifically designed to transport riders who are in a wheelchair or scooter. Additionally, Uber drivers are certified to assist wheelchair-bound passengers.

Uber Assist

Some passengers could use an extra helping hand. Uber Assist provides additional service to passengers who are elderly or disabled.

For example, let’s say an elderly passenger would like a ride to a doctor’s appointment and they need assistance getting in and out of the vehicle. Uber Assist offers drivers who are certified to offer this help in addition to loading any assistive devices.

Uber Car Seat

It can be difficult for growing families to find transportation with car seats for their toddlers while they’re on the go. Uber Car Seat alleviates this pain by providing vehicles equipped with a car seat.

These vehicles allow one forward-facing car seat. Parents can even bring their own car seat if they prefer. Uber Car Seat can safely accommodate children who meet the following requirements. Children should be:

  • At least 12 months old
  • Between 22 pounds and 48 pounds
  • Between 31 inches and 52 inches

In some markets, you can even reserve Uber Black Car Seat and Uber Black SUV Car Seat.

Uber Taxi

Uber Taxi combines Uber’s reservation platform and the traditional taxi service. The Uber app enables you to digitally hail a taxi instead of sitting at the curb trying to wave one down.

Your driver will be a fully-licensed taxi driver and will show up in their cab. You can pay for your taxi directly through the app, but the pricing is more closely aligned with the taxi pricing model. Expect to pay a flat fee, metered rate, and 20% gratuity (included automatically).

Additional Uber Services

Uber offers even more select services in certain cities. It has also gone beyond ridesharing and entered markets like food delivery, package delivery, and bike-sharing.

Here are several more services that may be available in your city:

  • Uber Hourly: Reserve a dedicated car on an hourly basis.
  • Uber Pet: Bring your pets along for the ride.
  • Uber Connect: Send items locally to your family and friends.
  • Uber Eats: Order food delivery from your favorite restaurants in town.
  • Uber for Business: Get customized solutions like employee meal delivery and work-related transportation.
  • JUMP by Uber: Try bike share and scooter rentals so you can see the town on your own terms.
  • Uber Copter: Take to the air and reserve a seat on an Uber-operated helicopter.

There are also a few recently discontinued services Uber eliminated because they caused confusion amongst riders and drivers. Starting July 31, 2020, you’ll no longer be able to reserve these three services:

  • Uber Select: Luxury rideshare service similar to Uber Black that didn’t require black exteriors and interiors
  • Uber Lux: Ultra high-end vehicles, like Porsche, Rolls-Royce, and Maserati with professional drivers
  • Uber Lux SUV: The same service as Uber Lux but with more spacious vehicles

These services are being combined with Uber Black and Uber Black SUV, so you still have easy access to luxury transportation.

The Perfect Vehicle for You

Uber makes transportation accessible to all of its customers, regardless of needs or preferences. You can keep it simple and go with the easy option — UberX — or you can upgrade your ride to something like an Uber Comfort or Uber Black.

Plus, there are even more customized transportation solutions like wheelchair accessible vehicles, vehicles with car seats, and carpooling. Now, it’s time to decide which vehicle option is the right fit for you.

Similar to Uber, Lyft also offers more than one way to get around. Check out this side-by-side comparison between Uber and Lyft if you’re curious about Lyft’s vehicle selection.
